Denis Holmes memorial gate dedication

On Thursday 9 March 2017, a memorial gate commemorating the life and work of Denis Holmes, a long-time Godalming and Elstead resident and Rambler, was dedicated by his widow, Mrs Susan Holmes. She said the gate was a fitting memorial to her husband, as it was ‘strong, sturdy and reliable’ like Denis himself.

Festival of Winter Walks

We held a successful Festival of Winter Walks programme. The Group organised 14 walks during the Festival and these were well attended. We held our first Christmas Day walk and 15 people arrived for it. Two of these were new to organised walking and joined the Ramblers. A total of 385 people came out on the 15 walks, an average of 25 on each walk. The highest figure was 36 and the lowest 15.

Memorial gate for Denis Holmes

On 19 January 2017 five members of our Footpath Working Party installed this at the end of a footpath in Elstead (SU905444, GU8 6LG). It is by Paulshott Cottage at the Fulbrook Lane end of the path that runs between the B3001 and Fulbrook Lane. There will be a ceremony on Thursday 9 March 2017 at 2pm when Susan Holmes will officially open the gate.

A Chrismas walk on Christmas Day

We had a walk on Christmas Day for the first time. Our publicity officer sent the following press release about it to the Surrey Advertiser and it was published on 6 January 2017.

The appropriately named Alastair Chrismas, a member of the Godalming and Haslemere Ramblers, led a Christmas Day walk on Hankley Common, accompanied by 14 other keen Ramblers. The weather was mild and they completed a six-mile circular walk, finishing shortly after midday, in good time for Christmas lunch.
